Dinner w/ the Tylers - Chicken Spinach Lasagna

Over the last month or two I have resolved to cook more. A lot of the time, it’s cheaper, tastes better and is healthier.  I wasn’t doing great cooking and was very uncreative. We were having meat and a veggies almost every night and, well, the veggies was usually green beans. So, I’ve gone on a crusade to find and make a variety of different recipes.

I believe my husband is enjoying it and I feel better knowing that my son is getting healthier selection. So I’m going to share with you some of my favorite recipes.

Brandy from "Cooking W/ Brandy" is expecting #4 – YAY!!!! …but because of that she can’t stand the smell of food cooking, So we are going to give her a break and I will be sharing Dinner with the Tyler’s.

My dear friend Pat gave me another YUMMY recipe that I am going to share with you, Chicken Spinach Lasagna.  I was excited to make this because I knew my son needed iron and there was plenty in the spinach!  He loves this casserole, so it’s a win-win situation.

What you need…
  • 1 10oz pkg Frozen Spinach (thawed and drained)
  • 2 c cooked chicken (shredded)
  • 2 c sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ c chopped onion
  • 1 T cornstarch
  • ½ t salt
  • ¼ t pepper
  • 1 (8oz) jar sliced mushrooms drained
  • 1/3 c  mayo
  • 1 T soy sauce
  • 1 c sour cream
  • 1 (10oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 c grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 c chopped pecans.
  • Lasagna Noodles, cooked

Side note: Don’t freak out by the list of items needed.  If you don’t like something, you can drop it or if you want to substitute an item, go ahead. I have made this recipe so many times, and changed things, just because I didn’t have all the items in my cupboard.  It has always tasted super yummy!

What to do…
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients, except for the noodles, parmesan cheese, and pecans.
  3. Get out a 9x13 or large greased pan and lay a row of noodles. Then spread half the mixture from the bowl. Place another layer of noodles and spread the other half of the mixture on top. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and then pecans.
  4. Cook for 1 hour.
This is super yummy! I know you will enjoy it, so give it a shot.

Christ-Centered Marriage

How hard is humility?  How hard is it in our marriage?  How many times do we apologize but slant it so we are still getting our point across.  "I'm sorry for my attitude but... or I'm sorry I reacted to your comment"   I know I have; here is a quick challenge from joleneengle.
He irritated me that day while we were out on a run.
Our family hadn’t been out of the house to exercise in quite some time.  We were cooped up in our tiny home because the weather was well into the triple digits for several weeks.
We were all home, all the time.  We lived in our home.  Home-schooled in our home.  Ran a business in our home.  And managed a ministry in the home.  Needless to say, all four of us were getting on each other’s last nerves!
I thought the idea of getting out of the house would be wonderful for our family, and add exercise to the mix;  it might even lower the irritability meter.
Or so I thought…
Until I was running, and then I became hot and tired.
And then my Beloved snapped at me and the kids… and I snapped back as I told him he was snapping at us.  (Have you ever been in a cycle like this?)
He was wrong.
And well, that must have meant I was right, right? :)
I was annoyed.
Next thing I know he is no longer running beside me.  Without a word, he turned around and headed back home.
Seriously?
Fine.  Now I can run in peace, or so I thought.  No Christ-follower who is outside of the will of God can ignore the convictions of the Holy Spirit.  Here I thought I would be running in peace and quiet, but God kept convicting me of my sin!
The Lord’s words pierced my soul…
“Daughter, your words may have been true and accurate, but your tone and attitude were not pleasing to me.”
Ugh!
My pride just fueled my anger based on the entire conversation I had with my husband.
But I couldn’t ignore my Lord’s words.
“You’re in sin.  You’ve disrespected him.  You need to apologize.”
And let the wife see that she respects her husband.  Ephesians 5:33
Deep sigh…
It was a long run back home.  Very long.
My pride-filled tail was tucked between my legs as I headed up that long walk of a drive-way.
My flesh was reluctant to humble itself as I reached the front door.  I wanted to justify my position.  Slant the words so I could win the argument.  And tell him he was off.  Way off!
But my spirit wanted to obey my Lord.  (Otherwise if I choose not to listen to Him, He wouldn’t be my Lord, now would He?)
Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom  Proverbs 13:10
Sometimes I don’t want to take God’s advice, yet He is all wisdom.  He knows what we need in marriage.
So I said to my Beloved, “I’m sorry honey, will you forgive me for my disrespectful tone and attitude?”
I want a Christ-centered marriage, so I’m going to choose humility over pride.  It’s certainly not the easiest choice, but it is the God-honoring choice.
To shows humility to her husband.  How about you?  You wanna join me in this pursuit? :)

Husband Material

When I was a young girl (in my teens) I was encouraged to make a specific list of everything I wanted in my future husband.  Years later when I was packing up my stuff, I found that list and it was neat to see that every item on it came true.  Except for one, I wanted him to be older. :-)  My husband is 4 months younger.  Big deal!  :-) It was the important stuff that God took care of. :-) Here is a neat article by sheismore
Many people use the fact that God already knows the desires of our hearts as an excuse not to pray. Although, he does know them, he still commands us to, in Philippians 4:6. In the book of Mark, a blind man had his friends take him to Jesus to be healed for his eyesight. Yet when he got in front of Jesus, even though it was obvious what the blind man wanted, Jesus still asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”
Therefore, even if you have a vision or idea of what your future husband will be like, it is important that you define the specific traits in your life partner. I was in a Bible study where we were required to make a “husband list” for homework. It couldn’t just be a short list of the basics. We had to be specific. An example would be, “A man who has a calm temperament and handles stress well.” This may sound silly, but the reason it is important to put the important qualities you desire into writing is to hold you accountable. It also gives you heightened discernment in dating situations.
Let’s be honest ladies, it can be easy to let something slide or dismiss a red flag when a cute guy tells us yummy, fluttery words we want to hear. But is it an ugly situation when we let our hearts get too wrapped up into someone who ultimately doesn’t take care of it. The list keeps your standards in check and can help you quickly discern whether or not that guy gets a second date. It protects your heart against unnecessary wear and tear. In fact, your heart is so important to God that He says, “Above all else, guard your heart for from it flows the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23
I encourage each of you to make a husband list too. After I made mine, I met my husband 2 months later and not only was he every single character trait on that list, he was more. But I shouldn’t have been too surprised because of, “ him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,” Ephesians 3:20.
Now, each one of your lists is going to have unique things according to who you are, your quirks, likes and dislikes. But there are some fundamental traits that God wants to be non-negotiables. Choosing who you will partner the rest of your life with is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. Too many young women are settling for less than God’s best because they don’t know exactly how He expects His daughters to be treated. Based on scripture, here is a list of non-negotiables for you so you don’t have to second guess anymore.
1. He is a practicing believer.
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14. Issues and conflict are bound to rise in marriage, so it is crucial that there is a common foundation on which to hold the marriage accountable. The last thing you want to be fighting about is your faith, whether or not to pray and your viewpoints on religion. Believe me, I’ve been there before. It is exhausting.
2. God is the center of his life.
He seeks God’s wisdom in all the decisions he makes. - Proverbs 8:18-19
3. He has integrity and does not put himself in tempting situations.
He guards you against harm and protects the relationship. - Proverbs 5:8-9
4. Seeks mentorship and counsel.
It is important that your man is wise in realizing he can’t carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. When he is surrounded by men who are older than him who can offer advice, prayer and mentorship, he can be a better husband to you. -Proverbs 12:15
5. He is slow to anger.
There is peace in knowing your man holds an even temperament even when he is provoked. A man who allows his feelings, emotions and anger to determine his actions typically has tarnished relationships and is not a healthy place for you or a family. “-Proverbs 15:18
6. He holds strong conviction on the sacredness of fidelity.
A man is wise when he understand that infidelity and looking for pleasure outside of the marriage only brings strife. God actually calls him to rejoice over you all of his days. “- Proverbs 5:18-20.
7. He is honorable of your heart and emotional well-being.
I hated when a guy I was dating exposed my embarrassing moments or the private matters of our relationship with his friends. Picking on you may seem cute and funny at first, but it will get old after a while. You should feel honored and safe knowing you can always trust your husband to cover and speak well of you. “-Proverbs 5:17.
-1 Peter 4:8.
8. He is disciplined in living a life of integrity.
Watch how he handles temptation or sticky situations that test his character. Does he choose to do what’s right even when no one is watching? It is imperative to observe these things because it will indicate if you can trust his decision making. When you’re married, almost all of his decisions impact you. - Proverbs 5:23
9. Has solid work ethic.
“Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man..” Proverbs 6:10-11.
10. He pursues and loves you passionately.
The man you marry should make you feel loved like you’ve never felt before. Safe, accepted, desired, nurtured, protected and comforted. Jesus loves us deeply, he loves us so fiercely, that he willingly gave up his life to save us.
Pursues: “- Genesis 29:20.
Loves: “- Ephesians 5:25.
11. Romances you.
I know women who feel guilty or wrong for desiring romance in their relationship, as if they don’t deserve it. But God desires for your heart to be romanced, just as He longs to romance us. - Song of Solomon 1:2; 8:6.
12. He is humble and can admit when he is wrong.
There is nothing worse than a petty conflict blowing out of porportion because your partner refuses to admit they were wrong. Taking responsibility for his actions and apologizing for his mistakes is the sign of a real man.- Proverbs 16:18
No person will be perfect and grace is a beautiful thing that makes relationships flourish. That being said, this list for single ladies is to give a basic framework of character traits to look for or recognize whether or not there is desire for growth. Of course, use common sense when someone amazing walks in to your life but wasn’t exactly what you dreamed up. God surprises us, but always gives us what we need.
Ultimately, your divine Father wants you to be treated in a way that it is compared with how Christ cares for us. It is up to us though to believe we are worthy, set the standard, and have the faith that God works in perfect timing to introduce you to your husband.

Ladies Tea: Napkin Holders

We had a Ladies Tea at our church and I offered to help a friend do a table.  She payed for the materials and I did most of the work.  I had a hard time finding napkin holders so I decided to make my own.  It was so easy it's scary. :-)

What I used...

  1. Ribbon
  2. Hot Glue
  3. Glue Gun
What I did...
  1. I went to Walmart and found this cute flower ribbon.
  2. I measure it around the napkins and found that I only needed it the length of 5 flowers.
  3. So I cut the ribbon.
  4. Then I turned the ribbon inside out and glued the ends together.
  5. Once it dried, I flipped it back to the pretty side

10K Wedding for $200 Pt. 7 - Unity Sand

This is one of those things that you definitely can cut out, but many couples are doing it now and Erica wanted to do it. So, I got creative! I made my own sand!

Since, Erica had a country wedding, she used a mason jar as her vase.  She also had white sand at her house.  I had two skinny vases and we poured the colored sand in there.  Erica wanted blue and white which was super easy.  I left half the sand white and dyed the other half.  To dye the sand, this is what I did…

What I needed…
  1. Sand
  2. Food Coloring
  3. Zip lock Bag

What I did …
  1. I placed the amount of sand I was going to use in a plastic ziplock bag.
  2. I added a few drops of blue food coloring.
  3. Then I shook and mixed up the bag until the color was evenly mixed through the sand.
  4. I kept adding food coloring until I got the exact color I wanted.
  5. It was a SUPER easy process.

I believe that the Dollar Tree does carry sand sometimes in the art aisle. The one problem is getting enough of the right color.

If you want Unity Candles, a few cheaper options are …

  1. Check out Dollar Tree: You can buy the 2 Taper Candles and maybe even the pillar candle

  1. You can also use a smaller candle as long as it’s on a large candle holder.

  1. Borrow the candle holders or buy something that you would use a decoration for your house

  1. Check out thrift stores. Many times they actually have the fancy unity candles. They may be already lit but no one will be close enough to see that.

  1. Ask your friends or church members.  They may have some candles you can borrow.

10K Wedding for $200 Pt. 6 - The Cake

The average cost of wedding cakes and desserts is around $400. This is about $3 per slice for about 150 guests.

So what to do?!?  Well, I knew a lady in our church who could bake beautiful wedding cakes.  I talked to her and she offered to do the wedding cake for FREE as gift to Erica for her wedding.  It was SUPER sweet of Ann and the cake was lovely.  It had a simple basket weave look and was topped with flowers. The cake didn’t just look good, it was delicious. In fact, it was best tasting wedding cake I have EVER tasted!

So once again, our cost for an expensive part of the wedding was $0.  I can not say enough about how blessed Erica was.  I commend our giving church for working together to give such a wonderful gift of a wedding to Erica.

So what are some ways to save?!?

  1. ASK: You might be getting tired of this step, but it’s a GREAT tool.  Many times, people will use their talents to help a bride. Also people know other people and can sometimes call in a favor.

  1. Take the total number of guests and reduce it 10%.  A lot of people do not eat the cake or they take slices smaller then what is alloted.

  1. Have a partially-fake cake.  The top layer is real, this is the one that you cut into with the groom. The others are just decorated to look cute.  Then you have sheet cake in the back that is cut up and put on plates.  Once the bride and groom cut the cake, you have  servers start bringing out the trays of cake. This cuts down on the cost A LOT.

  1. You can also just reduce the size of the cake and use sheet cakes as well.

  1. Cut out the groom’s cake. Who started this tradition anyway?

  1. Cupcake wedding cake. This is also a popular new trend.

  1. Instead of using sugar flowers, use fresh flowers and ribbon to decorate your cake.  Ribbon takes seconds to put on and fresh or artificial flowers are cheaper then making a creation out of sugar.

I hope these suggestions help!  If a friend offers to make your cake, you can always offer to pay for the ingredients and supplies.  This helps them to help you. – Rejoicing in the present

10K Wedding for $200 Pt. 5 - Reception

Erica knew that the reception would be quite expensive. We had the cake covered but since the wedding was at lunchtime we had to think up a plan. We decided to do a pot luck dinner. Erica was more worried about getting married then getting presents so we wrote on the invitations "in lieu of a gift, please bring a dish to share at the reception." This went over great and there was lots of food to share with everyone.  Some people brought her gifts anyway, so it was a win-win situation.

Here are some suggestions for your reception

  • Cake and punch reception: This is become increasingly popular. As most people can not afford to feed too many people, the dessert-only option is a winner. On the invitation you write something to the effect of "Dessert Reception to Follow".
  • Dessert Reception: If you don't like just having a wedding cake, you can do what I did and have a dessert bar. I had a table full of all different kinds of mini-desserts. (Everything from a variety of cookies, brownies, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered ________ (you name it, I had it) to cake and much more. I also had fruit for those who couldn't eat all the sugar.
  • Potluck Weddings:  If you are having close friends and family, or church folk, this is always a great option. Many people don't mind bringing food to share.
  • Finger Foods:  This is like the dessert reception except you have a variety of finger foods.  If you have a lot of family in town, this is REALLY easy.  Just ask each of them to help you make appetizers and finger foods. Many hands, little work!
  • Dinner: I don't really feel like this is a good option or an option to save money.  You can burn through money in a hot-second by doing dinners. But here are a few things to think about if you decide on this option:
    • Catering:  Most catered dinners are, at the cheapest, $12 a plate.
    • Ask your family to help. Use easy, quick recipes that produce large quantities. Pulled pork is pretty easy to make and spaghetti is another easy one. Salads and do-it-ahead recipes are the way to go.
    • Don't have servers.
    • Go simple.
I hope this gives you some ideas. Inexpensive weddings and receptions can be done! :-) Good Luck!
